FDE SEN ABC Frameworks®
The FDE SEN ABC Frameworks® is a specialist physical education programme designed to develop Agility, Balance and Coordination (ABC) in children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Developed through years of practical experience across mainstream schools, specialist provisions and community settings, the framework combines structured movement activities with purposeful social and emotional development. Every session is carefully planned to provide an inclusive, engaging and supportive environment where children can develop at their own pace whilst experiencing success.
Rather than focusing solely on physical ability, the FDE SEN ABC Framework® recognises the close relationship between movement, confidence, communication and emotional wellbeing. As children develop fundamental movement skills, they also build resilience, independence, self-esteem and positive relationships with others.

Suitable for delivery across mainstream primary schools, specialist SEND settings, resource bases, alternative provision and community programmes, the framework is adaptable to meet the individual needs of every participant whilst maintaining consistent learning outcomes.
The programme has been successfully delivered throughout Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, London and the East of England, supporting children with a wide range of additional needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Global Developmental Delay (GDD), Down Syndrome, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and other learning and physical needs.
At Football Development East, we believe every child deserves access to high-quality physical education that is appropriately adapted to their abilities. The FDE SEN ABC Framework® provides children with opportunities to experience achievement, develop lifelong movement skills and participate in an environment where they feel valued, included and free to be themselves.

Physical education plays a vital role in the holistic development of primary school children, extending far beyond the simple benefits of physical activity. Research has consistently demonstrated a strong correlation between regular physical education and enhanced cognitive function, improved academic performance, and better overall brain development in young learners. The positive impacts of PE are particularly pronounced in children with special educational needs (SEN), where structured physical activities can serve as powerful tools for learning, development, and integration. Studies have shown that SEN children who participate in regular PE programmes often experience significant improvements in motor skills, social interaction, and emotional regulation compared to those who don't receive adequate physical education

From a physical development perspective, PE provides children with essential opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, and spatial awareness. Regular participation in physical activities strengthens muscles and bones, improves cardiovascular health, and helps maintain healthy body weight during crucial growth periods. These physical benefits lay the foundation for lifelong health and wellness habits, while also supporting the development of fine motor skills that are essential for activities like writing, drawing, and other classroom tasks. The structured nature of PE classes allows children to progressively build their physical capabilities in a safe and supervised environment.

The social development benefits of physical education are equally significant, as PE classes create natural opportunities for children to interact, cooperate, and develop crucial interpersonal skills. Through team sports and group activities, children learn valuable lessons in collaboration, communication, and leadership. They develop empathy by supporting peers who may struggle with certain activities, learn to follow rules and instructions, and understand the importance of fair play. For SEN children, these social interactions in a structured PE environment can be particularly beneficial, helping them build confidence in social situations and develop meaningful relationships with their peers.
Social.
The psychological benefits of physical education extend deep into a child's emotional and mental well-being. Regular physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, natural mood elevators that help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting a positive mental state. Through PE, children develop resilience by learning to cope with both success and failure, build self-esteem through skill mastery, and gain confidence in their physical abilities. The sense of achievement that comes from improving at physical tasks can significantly boost a child's self-worth and motivation, creating a positive feedback loop that extends into other areas of their academic and personal life. For children with special educational needs, these psychological benefits can be transformative, helping them develop emotional regulation skills and a stronger sense of self-efficacy.
