Accredited Talent Identification & Player Pathways
The right opportunity. The right environment. The right time.
At Football Development East, Talent Identification is about much more than identifying a talented footballer. It is about understanding the player, recognising their current ability and future potential, and helping them find an environment in which they have a genuine opportunity to develop.
Our Talent Identification work is informed by more than a decade of experience across grassroots football, professional academy environments, the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), player development and the wider football pathway.
This experience spans players from the Foundation Phase through Youth Development and Professional Development phases and into senior football.
We provide independent, informed and realistic assessment. We do not believe that every talented young player needs to be placed at the highest level available, nor that obtaining an academy trial should automatically be considered a successful outcome. The quality of the environment, likely opportunity to play and develop, the individual needs of the player and the timing of any move are equally important.
For some players, the appropriate next step may be an academy opportunity. For others, it may be remaining within grassroots football, moving to a stronger development environment, entering a senior pathway or exploring opportunities within semi-professional or professional football.
There is no single pathway through the game.
How we identify talent
We look beyond a single performance.
Technical ability is important, but Talent Identification also requires an understanding of physical development, tactical awareness, decision-making, movement, mentality, personality, coachability and the potential for continued development.
Particularly with younger players, we recognise that development is rarely linear. Players mature at different rates, experience different opportunities and can change considerably over relatively short periods of time. Our approach therefore considers potential as well as current performance.
Our experience includes working within EPPP recruitment environments, producing player reports against defined profiling criteria, observing and tracking players over time and supporting trial and recruitment processes.

Our network
Football is built on relationships, but our network does not determine our assessment of a player.
Where we believe an opportunity is appropriate, FDE may make an introduction or recommendation to a club or football environment within our professional network. We will only do so where we genuinely believe that the opportunity is appropriate for the player.
An introduction is not a guarantee of a trial, registration, academy place, contract or progression. Those decisions belong entirely to the receiving club.
Once an appropriate introduction has been made, FDE ordinarily steps back and allows the player, parent and club to develop that relationship directly. We are not an intermediary or agent in that relationship.
Honest assessment matters
Not every assessment results in a recommendation.
That is important.
We will not recommend a player simply because a player or parent wants an academy opportunity, and we will not create unrealistic expectations about where somebody currently sits within the football pathway.
Where we believe a player would benefit from further development before being introduced to another environment, we will say so.
Equally, where we identify a player whom we believe should be seen at another level, we are prepared to make that recommendation.
Our reputation with players, parents, coaches and clubs depends upon our recommendations being considered, credible and made for the right reasons.
The player comes first
FDE works across grassroots, SEND and disability football, academy environments and the wider youth and senior game.
That breadth of experience has reinforced one principle:
Talent should never be considered in isolation from the person.
For children and young people in particular, welfare, education, enjoyment, confidence and long-term development matter alongside football ability. Progression should be positive for the player rather than progression simply for its own sake.
Our approach is therefore player-first, development-led and independent.
We will never promise a pathway that we cannot guarantee. We will never manufacture an opportunity simply to demonstrate that we have contacts. And we will never recommend a player to an environment that we do not believe is appropriate simply because it carries a bigger name.
